Choosing the right metal can make a big difference to the comfort, care and longevity of your piercing jewellery. Here's how our three main jewellery metals compare.
TITANIUM — BEST FOR SENSITIVE SKIN
Skin sensitivity: Excellent choice for sensitive skin
Best for: Fresh* or healed piercings
Everyday wear: Excellent
Care: Low maintenance
Titanium is lightweight, durable and highly resistant to corrosion. It's our recommended choice if you have sensitive skin or are concerned about nickel sensitivity.
316L SURGICAL STEEL — DURABLE EVERYDAY CHOICE
Skin sensitivity: Suitable for many people
Best for: Healed piercings
Everyday wear: Very good
Care: Easy care
316L Surgical Steel is strong, durable and resistant to everyday wear, making it a popular choice for body jewellery. Surgical steel contains nickel, so if you have a known nickel sensitivity or particularly sensitive skin, we recommend choosing titanium instead.
BRASS — STATEMENT JEWELLERY
Skin sensitivity: Not recommended for sensitive skin
Best for: Fully healed piercings
Everyday wear: Occasional wear
Care: Keep dry
Brass allows us to create more detailed and decorative jewellery designs, but it requires more care than titanium or surgical steel. Jewellery containing brass should only be worn in fully healed piercings. Keep it dry and remove before showering, swimming, exercising or sleeping.
A note about fresh piercings
The metal is only one part of choosing jewellery for a fresh piercing. The jewellery's gauge, length, design, threading and surface finish also need to be appropriate for your piercing and anatomy.
If your piercing is still healing, we recommend checking with a professional piercer before changing your jewellery.
Mixed-material jewellery
If a piece contains more than one metal, always follow the care and wear guidance for the most sensitive material. For example, jewellery with a 316L Surgical Steel bar and a brass charm should be treated as brass jewellery and kept dry.
✨ Jewellery Care
Keep your jewellery looking its best with a little regular care.
316L Surgical Steel & Titanium
Jewellery marked as waterproof can be worn around water during normal everyday use. After exposure to swimming pools, seawater, cosmetics or sweat, rinse with clean water and dry thoroughly with a soft cloth.
Brass & Plated Jewellery
To help preserve the finish, keep brass and plated decorative pieces away from water, perfume, lotions and other chemicals. Remove before showering, swimming or exercising where possible.
Cleaning Your Jewellery
Gently clean with warm water and a mild, fragrance-free soap, then rinse and dry thoroughly. Avoid abrasive cleaners, alcohol, bleach and harsh chemicals, which may damage polished, plated or crystal finishes.
Storage
Store jewellery somewhere clean and dry, ideally separately from other pieces to help prevent scratches and tangling. The zip lock pouch provided with your order is perfect for this!
💡 Tip: Always check the material information shown on the product page, as care requirements can vary depending on the metal, plating and decorative components used.
